Presidents Evening

“An Audience with David Suchet”

Our Presidents Evening this year was very special as we had Sir David Suchet as our guest speaker.

David, who you may know from his role as Poirot for 25 years or for many appearances on stage, film and TV. What is not so well know is that David is a keen amateur photographer.

He has been interested in photography all his life, well certainly since the age of 8 when his grandfather started to show him how his Leica camera worked. That grandfather was James Jarche, who is known for taking the first pictures of Wallis Simpson and Edward V111, as well as the French aviator Louis Bleriot. David brought that camera along with him, explaining how that moment started a lifelong interest in photography. He said that his grandfather showed him how the camera worked, and from that moment helped David develop his own photographic style. Now David is the Honorary President of the Leica Society.

The evening was split into two halves, the first being about David’s interest in photography and the second half about his acting career, while never leaving the photographic theme of the evening.

David is an excellent speaker, who was pleased to take and answer any questions. He was fascinating, informative and entertaining. A very special evening.

Thank you, David, for coming along, and Tony for organising. I leave you with comments from some of our members.
