Lydiard Park – This Year’s Bernard Hinton Park.
This year’s Bernard Hinton Competition is for images taken in Lydiard Park. For those who are not sure what the Bernard Hinton Competition is or the rules, the details below are taken straight from the SPS website and rule book.
The “Bernard Hinton” Competition
Medium: Digital only
Category: Combined
Judge: Club Members
Trophy: Pewter Cup
This is named after a past member of the club who took a great interest in photographing Swindon’s Parks and gardens.
The digital image must have been taken in the nominated Swindon park or garden during the preceding or current club season, the venue of which will be published in the programme each year.
As you can see, you can use a photo of Lydiard park taken any time during the 2015-16 season or the 2016-17 season; and you have until February 2017 before the actual competition night, so no hurry.
However, Lydiard is not in this year’s summer programme so we thought we would give you a little reminder, and time to think about all of the possibilities for this very special Swindon Park, at what may be an important time in its history. So here are a few links that may get you thinking about possible competition winners!

This is the link to the Lydiard Park main website. Here you will find information about all of the very varied possibilities for photographs including a historic house and church, a walled garden, wonderful parkland and much more. And if you are a dog lover or owner you may find reading about the council’s proposal for a public space protection order interesting.
This next link is Trip advisor, in case you wish to see other people’s images of the park and read about other people’s opinions of it.

Now we get political, without of course giving an opinion one way or the other in this article. This link is about a petition against proposals by the council who are looking to find a way to fund the cost of the park’s upkeep.

And the final link; the Facebook page of a group of local people formed after the council’s proposal for Lydiard Park.
This is the year Swindon is celebrating its 175th year and there is a photographic exhibition in the museum and art gallery of historic pictures of the town. I wondered what image I would need to take of Lydiard park for it to be in the historic photo exhibition for Swindon’s 250th year in 75 years’ time?
There you are, Lydiard park has many possibilities for great images and I hope you will be inspired to take a few.
